John C Fremont

John C Fremont (known as the “pathfinder”) was an early explorer, who, in 1838 accompanied Nicollet, a French geologist to western Minnesota and eastern Dakota

Early Fremont History

Formation of Fremont twp in 1873 when Moody County was organized. (The year of the massive German-Russian immigration, Advent of Railroads in South Dakota). Fremont history is tightly weaved into that of Medary, which became the county seat of Midway County in 1857—so before Moody County, we were probably part of Midway or Minnehaha County. The population of Fremont twp in 1900 was 400—do you think our present population is more or less than this?

Current Road Closures for Construction or Snow

March 17th: UPDATE: 470th to north plowed one lane and water receded to the south....
FOR CURRENT UPDATES--contact your local Fremont Twp supervisors--for their contact information, call or email the County Auditor's office

COMPLETE BLOCKAGE IMMINENT of 470th Ave 225th through 224th St.

Recent plowing only goes to border of trees--otherwise north from that still blocked

NOTICE--Your input--either via comments or emailing me to post (Complete Contact Form at bottom of this blog)--is important in updating these closures as they are often beyond the normal Township approved Winter Maintenance Closures and trying to drive on these roads without knowing they are closed can be extremely hazardous (Note a recent Accident on I 90 where a tow truck had only one lane to get a car out of the way and another vehicle hit the tow truck in the right of way and was killed.)

I will try to verify with Twp board and Loiseau on any other closures or one-way only access.

Some are also just plowed one lane only so having to get towed off these roads may be impossible.

Per Township Board:

No Winter Maintenance:
1. 225th from 470th to 469th (Signed but sign no longer visible)
2. 221st from 469th to Hwy 77

CONSTRUCTION CLOSURES
 1. Hwy 77 north to Big Sioux River--about 6 months (Local Traffic only)

Other--No plowing:

1. 470th from 225 to 226th
2. Narrow One-lane due to very high drifts on either side of road:
2. 470th from 22471/22474 north to 224th.  As of March 14

PHOTOS March 11-12 (2019)

Update: No plowing as of March 12 - 14

Last night a large truck with stock trailer slipped into ditch/snowbank on our road--he was from Iowa and didn't know the area so we just wanted to find out from residents who deal with stock trailers the best towing service to call to help him get the rig unstuck. It would have been easier if we had a central place to check for anyone who provides that service in our twp--whether having to come from Brookings or Madison or Flandreau.

We didn't expect anyone else to do the towing (as we also didnt' have the equipment) but just a resource listed here perhaps.
